The Census Conundrum
|
During a recent census, a man was being interviewed by a census taker. He told the census taker that he had 3 children. When asked their ages, the man replied, "The product of their ages is 72. The sum of their ages is the same as the number on my mailbox."
The census taker ran to the mailbox and checked the number. "I still can't tell," he said. The man replied, "Oh sorry. I have to go. My oldest is sick in bed."
With that, the census taker wrote down the ages of the 3 children and left. How old are the children?

US Duct
Improved Safety and Performance of Duct Systems
|
Small things can make a big difference. The ductwork carrying materials and debris in a complex, engineered system is often an afterthought. But even a small problem with the ducts can lead to big headaches. They can become clogged, affecting flow, even creating an internal fire or explosion. Holes or breaks allow materials to easily escape. In areas of high humidity, moisture can get in, potentially corroding the ducts or slowing the flow.
The specifics of your application should dictate your selection.
- Do you need galvanized, stainless steel or carbon steel?
- How will your ducts be joined - Clamped, Bolted?
- Are you conveying abrasive or corrosive materials?
- Will you require a coating?
TEC Engineering can help you navigate the many options, insuring the best fit, materials and construction for a reliable ductwork system. US Duct is on hand to provide custom ductwork to suit your specific needs. Products are offered in a variety of sizes, beginning at 3" Gauges range from 24 GA to 3/16" thickness.
Ducting Options from US Duct
Clamp Together Duct
Quick Connect, Quick Assembly, No Weld
Also known as rolled-lip ducting, US Duct's laser-welded, clamp together ducting (CTD) is usually the fastest, most versatile and most reliable ductwork for dust collection systems. Utilizing a rolled lip, a gasketed, over-center clamp pulls the ends together and envelopes them inside a sealing gasket. By using a separate 11" long adjustable sleeve and/or an integral adjustable collar on each fitting, the US Duct Clamp Together system is infinitely adjustable, even after installation. The ease and flexibility of this modular system can reduce installation time by 70%.

US Tubing
Modular, Fully-Welded, Airtight
If your application requires an even tighter duct option, US Tubing's airtight ducting provides the tightness of a flange and gasket seal with the convenience of a clamp together connection system. The laser welded, airtight duct in a clamp connection style is the best solution when moving oil mist, fine grain, harmful chemicals, or other minute particles, as well as positive pressure systems requiring a leak-free connection.
The components (pipes, branches, elbows, etc.) are standard 20 gauge metal (galvanized, stainless steel, painted) with a range of 22 to 16 gauge available upon request. The pipe comes in standard 59" lengths which can be easily clamp-connected together for long runs. An optional adjustable sleeve pipe allows for field adjustments.

Flanged Ductwork
Flanged duct, also called angle rings or angle flanges, is available in black iron, galvanized, or stainless steel, with or without holes. The flanges attach to duct available in sizes 3" and up. Construction methods range from laser welded pipe and mechanically lock elbows in lighter gauges to fully welded product in heavy gauge (even up to 1/4") — dependent upon the application.

Vanstone Flange
A technique where a flange is used to mate 90-degree lips turned onto the pipe or duct component. The flange is placed onto the pipe, the lip turned back and the flange left loose. When the flanges are pulled together, the VanStoned lips of the pieces that are being connected press together to make a secure metal to metal connection. Because the flanges are loose on all pieces, the center-line of the components is easily aligned. Standard Vanstone pipe lengths are a nominal 59”.
Welded Flange
Flanges are welded to the duct. The faces of the flanges are the mating surface, as opposed to the Vanstone where the duct lips are mating. Standard welded flange pipe lengths are a nominal 60”.
-
Full welded duct flanges have a continuous weld.
-
Intermittently welded duct flanges are welded at intervals around the duct.
