    Talking Water Gardens

Sometimes it is not what you see, but what you don't see. Talking Waters Gardens, named for the sound of falling water being aerated and mixed, is one such engineering project. The water reclamation system, located in Oregon on an old industrial site, is the first public/private project of its kind in the U.S.

Fully treated but warm wastewater from a water reclamation facility is diverted through an engineered wetland area, mimicking the cleansing and cooling characteristics found in nature. The natural treatment of municipal and industrial wastewater is the final step before the treated water returns to the Williamette River.

Talking Water Gardens replicates nature through a series of hydro-logical features. Electricity pumps water to the wetlands, where it is gravity-fed through the rest of the natural treatment processes. The natural purification project includes plantings to prevent erosion and reduce water temperature and rock waterfalls to aerate and mix the water, enriching the oxygen content. The 50-acre site, operates year-round with a total flow of up to 12.6 million gallons per day.

    The facility is designed to:

    • Reduce water temperature, (excess thermal load) by up to 150 million kilocalories per day, meeting state guidelines and protecting sensitive fish habitat.
    • Naturally aerate and treat water to reduce pollutant levels (including removing 2,000 lbs/day of nitrogen and 40 lbs/day of phosphorus).
    • Restore forest and wetlands by planting native species.
    • Create a healthy wetland environment to promote wildlife on what was an industrial site.
    • Create a natural attraction for area visitors that also teaches responsible water reclamation and environmental sustainability.
