SOLVE IT!

Question

Knowing the volumetric flow rates of the water going into the two pipes, what is the velocity of the water coming out?

Solution

The flow from the two entry pipes are combined at the union. Adding the two, we get (5000 + 2000) or 7000 cu in/ sec. This is the volume flow at the exit. The exit pipe has a radius of 3", so the area is its radius squared (9) * Pi or 28.27. The exit velocity is the flow divided by the area or 247.6 in/sec.
